Jewish Art Dilemmas: Restrictions, Originality, and Assimilation

Jewish artists have long been challenged to develop art in spite of the Second Commandment, which
prohibits the creation of any graven images. This presentation will explore the search for an original style
by Jewish artists, from the building of the tabernacle in the desert through the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem. Join Nathan Harpaz, manager and curator of the Koehnline Museum of Art and instructor of art history and museum studies, to consider the influence of non-Jewish styles on Jewish art and architecture
as a reflection of diversity and assimilation. [Room 1604]
