THURSDAY

Paul: Apostle or Apostate?
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Paul of Tarsus, a Pharisee whose zeal led him to persecute the church for its departure from Jewish tradition, laid the foundation for a universal religion. Was he a traitor to his people? Join Marianka Fousek, Th.D., to examine Paul’s letters for a better understanding of the momentous development from Judaism to Gentile Christianity. [Room A151]

Teach-in: Yoga and the Art of Zen
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Ethnic Bake Sale and Origami Workshop
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Coordinated by Student Leaders at Skokie, this sale will feature a variety of tasty baked goods from different cultures (while supplies last). Participants also will have the opportunity to create their own origami, the art of Japanese paper folding. [Main Lobby]

Turkish Politics Since The Second Iraq War
1 - 2:30 p.m.

Turkey’s political scene has undergone crucial change since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2004. The nation’s reigning political party—a moderate Islamist and pro-European entity—has been forced to accommodate and contain a variety of political tensions resulting from the rise of anti-American and anti-European ideas, the development of extreme nationalism, and growing military intervention in Turkish politics. Join Kaya Sahin, Ph.D., a member of the history faculty at Northwestern University, to explore political Islam and the developments of the past few years. [Room A145/A152]

The Life and Times of Edith Piaf
5:30 - 6 p.m.

Join Danielle Gould, instructor of French, for a presentation on the life and times of the legendary chanteuse, Edith Piaf. Enjoy film clips from her concerts and learn more about her signature song, “La vie en rose.” [Room A152]

Hope of Many: Adoption in Russia
5:30 - 6 p.m.

After the fall of Communism, many of Eastern Europe’s strained state orphanages began allowing Westerners to adopt their young charges. This policy made dreams come true for many couples, yet sparked a debate in the former Soviet nations along the lines of ethnicity, religion, and nationalism. Join Nicholas Catanese, instructor of Russian, for an informative discussion on the current state of this complex issue. [Room P103]

The Italian (Russian) – Modern Language Film Festival [Room P103]
6 - 7:45 p.m.

La Vie en Rose (French) – Modern Language Film Festival [Room A152]
6 - 8:20 p.m.
