How to Listen to a Symphony
10 - 11:30 a.m.

Join music aficionado Jim Kendros to explore the early symphonies of Mozart and Hayden in this symphonic sojourn. Hear the elegance and charm of these youthful masters and discuss the early history of the symphony. [Room A151]

Clipped Coins and Herring: Intercultural Criminals in Medieval England
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Explore the relationship between medieval English Christians and Jews in business relationships, as well as in the pursuit of “illegal gain.” Evidence may be found in legal records, specifically in the records of coin-clipping offenses, allegations of complicity between Jews and Christians to falsify records in the archa (communal archives), and the pawning of stolen goods. Join Frances Mitilineos, instructor of history, for a presentation that shows both complicity and antipathy between medieval English Christians and Jews in activities that took place outside the law. [Room P103]

Lamajamal
12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Experience a unique musical performance by Lamajamal, a group dedicated to giving educational workshops for the better understanding of diverse world cultures. The program features sacred and profane music from the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, and Eastern Europe. Using music as a compass, Lamajamal takes their audience on a journey through various regions of the East. Learn what makes these musical traditions distinct and what makes them part of a universal human expression. Separate ticket is required ($10 general admission, $5 students). For details, call the Skokie Theater at 847-671-7761. [Skokie Theater, 7924 N. Lincoln Ave.]

Kausay
1:30 - 2:30 p.m.

Kausay is a group of musicians from Ecuador that performs traditional music of the Andes (Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia), from pre-Hispanic styles to more contemporary rhythms. The group’s haunting sounds are made by exotic instruments including panpipes and flutes, drums (bombo), the cha’jchas (rattles made from goat hooves), and the stringed charango, created from the shell of an armadillo. [Cafeteria]
