Cascading Style Sheets

I.     Course Prefix/Number: CIS 132

       Course Name: Cascading Style Sheets

       Credits: 3 (3 lecture; 1 lab)

II.    Prerequisite

Recommended: CIS131 or working knowledge of HTML/XHTML.

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course expands basic development of Web pages. Content focuses on the use of Cascading Style Sheets to present the content of a well structured XHTML document.

IV.   Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Create well structured XHTML documents
  2. Explain the concept of semantic markup and document tree
  3. Understand and apply concepts of cascade, specificity, and inheritance
  4. Remove deprecated tags from XHTML documents
  5. Write HTML, class, id, descendant, pseudo-class, pseudo-element and adjacent sibling selectors to style documents
  6. Write CSS rules utilizing background, border, font, list, margin, padding, positioning, text, alignment, float, visibility, and display and related properties
  7. Demonstrate the use of appropriate values for properties
  8. Apply styles to tags including <div> and <span> tags
  9. Create web pages using CSS for layout in place of tables
  10. Create style sheets for common non-screen media (e.g. print, handheld devices)
  11. Explain browser differences and its impact on what is viewed on a web page
  12. Apply well supported properties and values from the CSS3 specification

V.    Academic Integrity

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• cheating,
• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,
• unauthorized changes on official documents,
• pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,
• making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

A. Create well structured XHTML documents
B. Understand the concept of the document tree
C. Understand the concept of semantic markup
D. Demonstrate correct syntax for writing CSS
    1. structure of a style rule
    2. structure of style sheets
E. Understand and use CSS selectors
F. Understand and apply concepts of the cascade, specificity, and inheritance
G. Use appropriate units of length, color, numbers, percentages, URLs and keywords for CSS properties
H. Use appropriate tools to write error-free CSS

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Program demonstrations, hands-on usage, textbook reading, applicable web sites, lecture, class discussions, group work, and guest speakers may be used.
Course may be taught as face-to-face, media-based, hybrid or online course.

D.    Attend and participate in lab as required
