Women’s Basketball Inks Three Standout Players
(June 2010)

The Raiders continue reloading for the 2010-11 season by signing three standout offensive players.

Maria Joyce (pictured below), a four-year starter at Lane Tech, signed her letter of intent on June 2. The 5-11 forward amassed more than 1,300 points with the Indians. Joyce is a transfer from Illinois Central College, where she averaged 5.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.

The Raiders also added 5-10 center Megan O’Neill from Maine West. Her senior season, O’Neill was team MVP averaging 14.8 points and 9.0 rebounds a game. With the Warriors, she also was an all-conference, all-area and all-state player.

In addition, the Raiders gain international experience in the form of Paula Elum, a 5-10 guard from Valencia, Spain. Elum averaged 15 points per game playing for Ros Caseres for three seasons. She helped her club team to a first-place finish in the Spanish Zonal Tournament twice and a fourth-place position in the Spanish Championship. Besides playing overseas, Elum has NCCA Division I experience as she transfers to Oakton from the University of Wyoming.

“I’m very excited with the addition of Maria, Megan, and Paula because of their intelligence and rebounding skills,” said Rich Bolinder, women’s head basketball coach. “Not only do they bring height, which we’ve lacked over the last few years, they bring a wealth of experience from their club teams. Last season, we averaged slightly more than 49 points per game. With our newly signed players we will hopefully see that average increase tremendously.”

Shooting Star Returns to Oakton
(November 2009)

Former women’s basketball standout Agata Wojciechowska (Maine East) is back at Oakton to share her talents as an assistant coach for the 2009-2010 season.

Playing for the Raiders from 2005-2007, Wojciechowska’s 641 points secured a ninth-place rank on Oakton’s all-time scoring list. In addition, she was a fierce rebounder, tying for the top spot in all-time rebounds (490) and holding the College record for most rebounds in a single season (293).

“I’m excited about the opportunity, and this is like coming home,” noted the star hoopster, who graduated from Lewis University in 2009 with a degree in sports management. “I remember what it was like to be a student-athlete and I think that will serve me well as an assistant coach.”

Head coach Rich Bolinder said Wojciechowska, an all-conference and all-region player during her time at Oakton, brings a great deal to his coaching staff besides her exuberant youth. “She was an excellent post player for us,” said Bolinder, “with a variety of moves to get to the basket. As an assistant coach, she’ll be able to share her expertise in scoring which will help improve our inside game tremendously.”

2008-2009 Season Recap: Team Celebrates 20-Win Season

(April 7, 2009)
The women’s basketball squad at Oakton Community College celebrated many memorable team and individual accomplishments during the 2008-2009 season.

The Raiders (20-10, 10-4 Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference) celebrated their first 20-win season in school history under head coach Rich Bolinder, who also achieved his 500th coaching win of his career during the campaign. Bolinder, who emphasizes team defense, saw the Raiders allow just 54.6 points per game, which ranked 17th in NJCAA Division II.

Individually, sophomore guard Angie Rieger (Maine South) became the program’s all-time leading scorer on February 26, when she tallied her 889th career point in a contest against Prairie State. She finished her Oakton career with 900 points, surpassing Natalia Jedlinska (1999-2001), who scored 888 points for the Raiders. In addition, sophomore forward Ana Gonzalez (Niles West) was named Illinois Skyway MVP. Only the third women’s player in College history to win the award, Gonzalez averaged 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in ISCC games during the campaign.

The Raiders started the season strong winning nine of their first 12 games and had their best month in February, when they went 7-1. Despite falling to nationally-ranked Kankakee Community College in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region IV Division II Tournament on March 1, Bolinder was pleased with his team’s overall results.

“This year was very special,” said Bolinder, who finished his 21st campaign at Oakton and now has 284 wins with the program. “I’m so proud of this team. There are always several benchmarks to judge success and reaching the 20-win plateau was nice. However, we were tremendously successful in terms of resilience and perseverance. We might not have the biggest team, but they played with the most heart of any squad I can remember in recent history.”

For notching such a successful season, the Raiders accumulated numerous postseason awards from the NJCAA and the ISCC. Two players were named to the NJCAA Region IV Division II All-Region Team. Rieger earned a spot on the first team and Gonzalez was a second team selection. In addition to honoring Gonzalez as MVP, the ISCC also named Rieger as a first team selection. Honorable mention nods went to sophomore guard Chabria Survillion (Evanston) and sophomore forward Tisa Carter (Proviso East).

Player Notes
Erica Aykroid (Luther North), freshman forward.
An accurate passer who knew what to do in every situation on the court, Aykroid received the Coach’s Award for the 2008-2009 season. She had her best game on November 4, when she scored nine points against Wright College.

Renee Benjamin (Mather), freshman guard.
An accurate long-range shooter, Benjamin connected on 24 three-point baskets this season, second-best on the team. On December 4, she tallied 17 points against Triton College, her best game of the campaign.

Tisa Carter (Proviso East), sophomore forward.
Carter, a team co-MVP, was an all-around asset who could consistently record points, rebounds, assists, and steals. On November 6, she posted her best game when she accumulated 15 points, five rebounds, and three steals against South Suburban College.

Antoinette Collman (Maine East), freshman guard.
One of Oakton’s quickest players, Collman used her speed to vex opponents. Over the course of the season, she improved her mid-range shot tremendously. On February 17, Collman scored a season-high 11 points against College of Lake County.

Sarah Dominguez (Maine East), freshman guard.
Dominguez did not let her 5-foot6-inch frame prevent her from being one of the team’s best defensive players. She scored a season-high six points against South Suburban on November 6.

Janel Gomez (Jacobs), sophomore center.
An excellent defender and the captain of the 2008-2009 squad, Gomez was the team’s most accurate shooter, as she led the Raiders in field goal percentage. She scored a season-high 14 points against Prairie State College on February 26.

Ana Gonzalez (Niles West), sophomore forward.
Gonzalez was named NJCAA Division II District D Player of the Week four times during the 2008-2009 season. The team co- MVP led the team in rebounding, scoring, and receiving charges. She leaves Oakton with 490 career rebounds, which ties her for the College record with Agata Wojciechowska (2005-2007). Gonzalez also is the program’s fourth-leading scorer (823 points). On December 6, she tied a school record for most points in a single game by scoring 36 points against Olive Harvey College.

A three-sport athlete, Olaworetan was a steady ball handler who rarely committed a turnover and also provided an imposing presence in the post. On January 29, she tallied a season-high four points and four rebounds against Morton College.

Angie Rieger (Maine South), sophomore guard.
The team co-MVP leaves Oakton as the school’s all-time leading scorer (900 points). For the season, she averaged 16.2 points per game and led the team in steals and three-point baskets. Rieger scored a season-high 27 points against Wright College on December 9.

Chabria Survillion (Evanston), sophomore guard.

She constantly frustrated opponents with her ball-handling skills by scoring against taller defenders. On January 27, she tallied a season-high 19 points against Prairie State College.

Rieger Leaves Mark as Program’s All-Time Leading Scorer

(March 10, 2009)

Sophomore guard Angie Rieger (Maine South) leaves Oakton with 900 career points – and as the College’s all-time leading women’s scorer. Rieger surpasses Natalia Jedlinska (1999-2001), who scored 888 points for the Raiders.

The Park Ridge native broke the scoring record on Thursday, February, 26, when she tallied her 889th point on a layup with six seconds remaining in a contest against Prairie State.

“It was great breaking the scoring record with my family in attendance,” said Rieger. “After the game, I cut down the net and got the game ball. It was pretty special.”

Rieger also said perseverance was the key to her accomplishment.

“At first I thought there was no way I would ever be able to break the scoring record,” said Rieger. “Once I started getting closer to it, I wanted it more and more and it was a goal I wanted to achieve. Breaking the record shows that once you set your mind on something, you can accomplish it.”

“Players like Angie don’t come around too often,” said head coach Rich Bolinder. “With her determination and strong competitive spirit, she has provided leadership on and off on the court. Angie represented our program with class over the last two seasons and as a result, she has earned the respect of players and coaches in our region. It’s been an extreme privilege to have coached her. Angie gave our program everything that she could and that’s all you could ask of a player.”

Averaging 15.8 points per contest, Rieger scored a season-high 28 points on Friday, November 14 against Harper College. Rieger also was named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference First Team and the NJCAA Region IV Division II All-Region First Team.

Gonzalez Earns MVP Honors

(February 27, 2009)

Sophomore forward Ana Gonzalez (Niles West) was named Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference MVP in women’s basketball. Only the third women’s player in College history to win the award, Gonzalez averaged 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in Illinois Skyway games this season.

Gonzalez joins Jane Steffan (1994) and Natalia Jedlinska (2001) as the only female players from Oakton to have earned MVP honors.

“It’s an honor for me to be named MVP, but I didn’t win it by myself.” said Gonzalez. “I received the award because of my teammates. I can’t win games by myself. My goal every game is the same – to play hard and contribute as much as I can on the floor.”

In 14 ISCC contests, Gonzalez was one of the most consistent players. She scored in double digits in 12 games, was the team’s leading rebounder in 11 contests, and shot 69 percent from the free-throw line.

“Ana’s biggest asset is that she plays with reckless abandon,” said Raiders head coach Rich Bolinder. “She fights for every ball in her area. Ana may only be 5-9, but she plays bigger than that. This award is a testament to her tenacity and the overall effort she has given all season. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Ana and I’m very proud of her.”

Gonzalez also earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team, along with sophomore guard Angie Rieger (Maine South). In the ISCC, Rieger averaged 13.8 points and 2.0 steals per game.

Raiders Raking in Player of the Week Honors
Sophomore forward Ana Gonzalez (Niles West) has been honored again as the NJCAA Division II District D Player of the Week. She combined to score 55 points and 26 rebounds in her two games for the week of December 6. Against Olive Harvey College on Saturday, December 6, she scored 36 points, which tied a school record for most points in a single game last achieved in 1994 by Jane Steffan. Gonzalez also scored 19 points and tallied 15 rebounds against Triton College on Thursday, December 4.

“Ana is one of the most consistent players I have ever seen,” said head coach Rich Bolinder. “You can pencil her in for 20 points and 10 rebounds a game.”

This is the third time this season an Oakton athlete has been named Player of the Week.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my 20 years here at Oakton,” said Bolinder. “We’re only five weeks into the season and we’re averaging a Player of the Week every other week. Assistant coaches Lisa Bolinder and Richard Varyu have been working hard with our players to develop their conditioning and all-around skills on the court. Those dividends are paying off for us.”

Gonzalez also was the Player of the Week for her performance during the week of November 22. Gonzalez combined to score 45 points and tally 20 rebounds in her two games against Joliet Junior College on Tuesday, November 18 and a club team from Northwestern on Thursday, November 20.

Sophomore guard Angie Rieger (Maine South) was honored for her accomplishments during the week of November 8. In her two games against Wright College on Tuesday, November 4 and South Suburban College on Thursday, November 6, she totaled 41 points.

2008-09 Season Outlook
The Raiders plan to run-and-gun in 2008, according to head coach Rich Bolinder, who begins his 21st season patrolling Oakton’s hardwood.

“We’ll have to play an up-tempo style all year as our tallest player is only 5-9,” says Bolinder. “Assistant coaches Lisa Bolinder and Richard Varyu have worked extremely hard with the team in order to get them ready physically for the season. We may not have height, but no one will be able to out-hustle us. We’ll have some experienced players ready to lead the way. ”

Oakton returns four players from last year’s squad which compiled an 18-13 overall record and finished third in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference. Offensively, the Raiders will rely on the experience of guard Angie Rieger, an all-conference and all-region selection who averaged 15.1 points and 3.3 steals per game, and forward Ana Gonzalez, an all-region selection who averaged 15.6 points and 10.1 rebounds a game. The Raiders also return guard Tisa Carter, the team’s leading shot blocker, and Janel Gomez, a strong inside defender who only played 12 games due to injury.

Antoinette Collman headlines the squad’s newcomers. The 5-6 guard comes to Oakton from Maine East High School, where she played for three seasons and served as captain her junior and senior years. During her final campaign at Maine East, Collman was recognized as team MVP and honored as an all-conference player by the Central Suburban League.

Renee Benjamin, a guard from Mather High School, gives the Raiders another scoring threat. A three-point specialist, she averaged 13.0 points her senior year. Other new players include: forward Erica Aykroid (Luther North), guard Sarah Dominguez (Maine East), and forward Abigail Olaworetan (Schurz). The Raiders also will have the services of Chabria Survillion (Evanston), a transfer from Lincoln Community College.

The Raiders open the 2008-09 season on the road Nov. 4, when they face Wright College. Conference play starts Jan. 6, when the Raiders travel to Morton College.

Oakton Co-Captain Signs Letter of Intent with Judson
(June 2008)
Sophomore guard Kristi Siemers (Fenton) will continue her playing career at the University of Judson, according to Oakton head coach Rich Bolinder. Siemers, named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference First Team after the 2007-08 season, signed a letter of intent with Judson University in May. A National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school, Judson competes in the Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference.

During her two-year playing career at Oakton, Siemers averaged 11.3 points, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. For the 2007-08 campaign, she made 75 three-pointers, three shy of the single-season school record. With 110 total three-point baskets, Siemers leaves as Oakton’s second leading scorer from long distance.

“Had Kristi not missed 15 games her freshman season, she would have rewritten Oakton’s scoring records,” said Bolinder. “The sky’s the limit for Kristi and Judson will be getting a great player.”

Prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, Siemers was named as co-captain of the Raiders and earned honors as a Preseason All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

“Kristi is very unselfish and always puts the team first,” said assistant coach Lisa Bolinder. “She is one of the finest ball handlers Oakton has ever had.”

Siemers graduates from Oakton with an Associate in Arts degree and plans on majoring in education at Judson.

2007-08 Season Recap
Stingy defense was a trademark of the 2007-08 women’s basketball team.

(March 2008)
Over the course of the season, the Raiders held opponents to just 54.8 points per game, which ranked 12th nationally. Oakton’s stellar defense was led by freshman Angie Rieger (Maine South), who set an Oakton single-season record for steals with 94. Offensively, Kristi Siemers (Fenton) drained 75 three-pointers on the season, three shy of the single-season school record. Such tenacity resulted in a 17-13 overall record and a 9-5 mark in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference for head coach Rich Bolinder and his squad.

The Raiders began the season with a five-game win streak and posted a 72-54 victory over previously undefeated Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opponent Moraine Valley Community College on Feb. 12. “That was our best played game of the season,” said Bolinder, who completed his 20th season as head coach. “Everyone was at their best offensively and defensively. That game was the benchmark for all other games.”

Oakton’s season ended at the hands of Prairie State College on Feb. 28 in a 74-68 loss in the semifinals of the NJCAA Region IV Division II Tournament, marking the first time in seven years the Raiders did not advance to the second round.

Several Raiders were honored by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference and the NJCAA for their stellar play throughout the course of the season. Rieger and Siemers were named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference All-Conference First Team. Rieger also was selected to the NJCAA All-Region IV Division II District D Second Team along with Ana Gonzalez (Niles West).

Janel Gomez (Jacobs), freshman forward/center. Providing an immeasurable inside presence, Gomez was pivotal in the team’s run toward a conference title. She was greatly missed the final three weeks of the season with a stress fracture in her foot. She posted a season high seven points against Waubonsee Community College on Jan. 15.

Ana Gonzalez (Niles West), freshman forward. With 425 points and 91 assists, Rieger has a legitimate shot of breaking the career record for assists and points next season. Natalia Jedlinska (2000-01) is the career leader in points with 888 and Fullett is the career assists leader with 200. Rieger had a season high 24 points against College of DuPage on Dec. 13.

Numerous postseason accolades also poured in for Wojciechowska as she was selected to the NJCAA Region IV Division II All-Region District D Second Team, the NJCAA Region IV Division II District D All-Tournament Team, and the Illinois Skyway Collegiate All-Conference First Team.

In addition to Wojciechowska, three other players were named to the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference All-Conference Team. Leslie Leaves Her Mark

Darcy Leslie finished her Oakton basketball career as one of the greatest players in school history.

The five-foot-seven forward from Mather High School leaves as Oakton’s leading rebounder. In the final game of the season, Leslie came up big with 17 rebounds finishing with 395, eclipsing the previous record of 389 set by Ann Brophy (1996 – 1998).

In addition, Leslie just missed out on ending her career as Oakton’s all-time leading scorer. She finished six points shy of surpassing the 888 point record set by Natalia Jedlinska (1999 – 2001).

Leslie also leaves as both the College’s third leading assists and steals leader in the history of women’s basketball at Oakton.

“Darcy is living proof of what determination and desire will do for you,” said Oakton head coach Rich Bolinder. “She was relentless on the boards for us in her two years at Oakton and always could be counted on to put up big numbers.”
