While
gender dynamics have shifted course in recent decades, most men still
don’t know how to explore their roles in society. Quite simply,
the support system for self-discovery is lacking, and men continue to
experience limited encouragement to provide support for other men.
The
Men’s Program at Oakton consists of several major components,
including the Men’s Support Group, which meets 7:30 – 10
p.m., Wednesday evenings, all year round (except when the College is
closed). Open to all men in the Oakton community, the Men’s Support
Group is facilitated by a professional counselor who is trained to assist
in exploring men’s issues and other topics of interest, from changing
careers and job relocation, to relationships, stress management, and
parenting. Although part of the College’s mission is to serve
the community, the Men’s Program at Oakton is a unique and special
component; it is extremely rare for a community college to offer a support
group free of charge to its residents.
In
addition to the Men’s Support Group, the Men’s Program at
Oakton also develops the annual Men’s Day program, and a three-part
series of “for men only” psychology courses. Workshops
and other experiential activities are presented on an annual basis.
These events will be listed under Upcoming Events when available. Newcomers
are always welcome. |
