Ask an Advisor
Did you know that Advising and Counseling Services offers e-mail advising? This service is designed to address the needs of students who have general questions (for example, Where can I find a listing of classes that fulfill the IAI general education curriculum? How many social and behavioral science classes are needed for a degree?) and not for students requiring case specific assistance (for example, What is my English and math placement? What classes do I need to finish my degree?)
Due to Federal laws and our desire to maintain student information in a secure and confidential manner, students are discouraged from including any personal information in their e-mail question, specifically social security numbers or student identification numbers (B numbers). Now, on to the Ask the Advisor Question of the Month . . .
Question: I've been academically dismissed from Oakton. I would like to come back, finish my general education credits, and transfer to another school to earn my bachelor's degree. How do I go about doing that?
Answer: Students are given three opportunities to maintain a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA before being academically dismissed. Once this happens, you may not take credit classes at Oakton for at least one full calendar year following your final semester of probationary work. However, during that time you may attend another college or take non-credit classes at Oakton.
Upon completion of your dismissal period, you may petition the Vice President of Student Affairs for re-admittance. To do so, submit a detailed description of the reasons for your poor academic performance and the steps you plan to take to prevent a re-occurrence. Re-admittance to Oakton is never guaranteed and is considered on a case-by-case basis.
When it’s time to transfer, you’ll need to submit an official transcript to the institution to which you are applying. Your dismissal standing will not be noted on the transcript, but your academic performance will be visible and may require an explanation. You will not be able to pick and choose which grades and credits are visible or transferable.
Remember that your academic record will transfer with you to each institution you choose to attend.
