       Course Name: Microcomputer Hardware Systems

Recommended: ELT 101 or ELT 107

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course introduces maintenance and repairs of personal computers. Content includes hardware parts of computers, theory of operation, function of parts, topics in maintenance, proper use of instruments in troubleshooting, limited repairs and an introduction to language.

IV.   Learning Objectives

Student will learn to:

  1. Identify the physical components of a computing device as well as their function.
  2. Recognize the essential software components
  3. Acquire the necessary knowledge to install an operating system
  4. Identify and detect errors in computers and how they can be avoided
  5. Assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair computers
  6. Apply diagnostic tools to maintain a computer
  7. Communicate effectively in a technical and non-technical environment

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VII.  Methods of Instruction

The course will include both lecture and lab hours.  The lectures will be discussion of topics, assignment of materials to read and practice questions and problems for homework and answer questions.  The lab projects will include the familiarization of the students with the tools, equipment and instruments.  Also study of the equipment to understand how they are connected together to function as a unit.  Practice on maintenance techniques and troubleshooting on a block format.
Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

Attendance is strongly recommended. All assignments are required to be finished on time, or a make-up test may be given at the following session for students who missed the test for a good reason.
