I.     Course Prefix/Number: POL 105

       Course Name: Conversational Polish

       Credits: 3 (2 lecture; 2 lab)

II.    Prerequisite

Polish 102 or consent of instructor: knowledge of beginning Polish vocabulary, cases, the present, past, and future tenses.

III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Course provides conversational practice in Polish to develop oral facility. Content includes specially designed exercises in pronunciation, vocabulary development, oral presentations, and class discussion of life in Poland.

IV.   Learning Objectives

  1. To build student proficiency in speaking Polish.
  2. To refine pronunciation and intonation.
  3. To acquire the vocabulary and contextual information necessary for functional use of Polish.
  4. To use the Polish language in the context of real life situations.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Class work is organized functionally; that is, it deals with the tasks or functions that form the basis of spoken communication.  Class time will be used to practice using Polish in order to express the kinds of communicative needs we all experience in a variety of situations.  Students’ suggestions for use of class time will be incorporated throughout the semester.  Group and individual oral reports and impromptu talks will also be used.  Students will work with a CD of authentic conversations coordinated with each chapter.
Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

This course must be taught face-to-face.

Class attendance and active participation are required.  Obviously, this is a participation class, so your presence is obligatory.  You should understand that frequent or extended absences will not allow you to develop your oral skills and therefore influence the instructor’s evaluation of your in-class oral performance.  If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what material was covered during your absence.  Prepare the assigned text pages prior to each class so that you will feel comfortable in the situations we play out.  There are no written exams.   At mid-semester, you will take an oral reading exam and you will need to participate in an assigned role-playing exercise; throughout the semester you will be involved in variety of group activities; and as a final, you will give an oral report and take an oral reading exam to demonstrate accuracy of pronunciation.
