III.   Course (Catalog) Description

Courses offer private study in specialized areas. Strongly recommended that student who desires to study piano, voice, etc. complete all class levels offered for that particular instrument (class piano, class voice, etc.). Intent of applied music is to increase ability to perform more advanced music from all periods and styles. Arrangements must be made through the music faculty who arrange lessons in piano, voice, band and orchestra instruments.

  1. To perform music artistically from a variety of periods, styles, and repertoire.
  2. To develop listening and critical thinking skills through self-evaluation of performance.

V.    Academic Integrity and Student Conduct

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

• cheating,
• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,
• unauthorized changes on official documents,

• making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI.   Sequence of Topics

  1. Repertoire:
    Level of Material: Continue development of the various styles of piano repertoire depending on the student’s playing ability.
  2. Technique:
    1. Continued development of skills from MUS 265
    2. Continued studies by Chopin
    3. Major scales in tenths (two and three octaves, parallel and contrary motion)
    4. Dominant seventh arpeggios (root position, four octaves, ascending and descending)
    5. Other technical exercise as needed.
  3. Sight Reading:
    Level of Material:
    1. Continued development of skills from MUS 265
    2. Studies from Early Advanced Classics to Moderns by Agay
  4. Transposition
    Level of Material:
    1. Continued development of skills from MUS 265
    2. Four-part instrumental scores
  5. Improvisation:
    Level of Material:
    1. Continued development of skills from MUS 265
    2. More advanced jazz improvisation from Scat by Swain
  6. Theory:
    1. Keyboard Harmony
      1. Continued development of skills from MUS 265
      2. Discussion of form found in the different piano literature
      3. Analysis of chordal structures found in the different piano literature
    2. Ear Training: Learn to listen and to evaluate the type of sound produced at the piano

The skills listed are minimum requirements. The instructor may add and/or modify these to fit the needs of the individual student.

VII.  Methods of Instruction

Weekly lesson will include lectures, explanation and demonstration of instrumental skills.

Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.

VIII. Course Practices Required

  1. Play intermediate to advanced literature depending on the student’s ability.
  2. Read and abide by the list of applied lesson policies handed out at the beginning of the term.

The various styles of piano repertoire are selected depending on the student’s playing ability.  Representative literature such as  “Four Piano Blues”  by Aaron Copland, Scott Joplin Rags, Scriabin, Duke Ellington and duet compositions by Walter and Carol Noona, etc.

X.    Methods of Evaluating Student Progress

Grade will be based on class attendance, preparedness and progress a student makes in his/her playing instrument during the semester.
