Understanding finances and investments and using this skill to support others is an important way to make our communities more equitable. From working as a financial advisor or loan officer to an analyst or manager, studying financial services can prepare you for a variety of careers that help others (and yourself) meet financial goals.
Oakton's financial services curriculum is designed for students interested in getting started in this field and for current middle-level employees in areas such as banking, securities or commodities trading who are looking for new opportunities.
In this program, you'll take on courses that provide a strong foundation of knowledge in a variety of business activities. Your studies will cover topics including commercial and consumer credit management, personal banking, investment analysis, trading techniques for securities and commodities, account and debt management, marketing and public relations.
Degrees and Certificates
In the Financial Services program, we offer an Investment Analysis Certificate: 15 credit hours of coursework in commodity futures trading, principles of fundamental analysis, principles of technical analysis and option markets. You can apply nine credit hours from this certificate to the A.A.S. degree in management and supervision.
Employment in business and financial operations occupations is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations, adding about 750,800 new jobs. Globalization, a growing economy, and a complex tax and regulatory environment are expected to continue to lead to strong demand for accountants and auditors.
This median annual wage for business and financial occupations was $72,250 in May 2020, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $41,950.
