Placement at Oakton

Placement is necessary to put Oakton students in the best position to succeed in the classroom. Placement helps students and their advisors choose the right courses to successfully achieve their academic goals. For many degree-seeking students, testing is not necessary, depending on a number of factors as indicated below:

Writing Placement

  • High school unweighted cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher from a transcript including 7th semester grades. (Must have graduated from an Illinois high school within the past three years.)
    Submit official high school transcript to the Enrollment Center for processing.
  • ACT with English and Reading sub-scores of 20 or higher
    or
    SAT with a 480 or higher in Evidence Based Reading and Writing
    Submit official or unofficial score reports ACT or SAT score to the Enrollment Center at esoperations@oakton.edu for processing. (Scores can be downloaded for free from act.org or collegeboard.org)
  • AP Scores
    A score of 3 or higher on the English Language and Composition AP exam will meet reading and writing placement. It can also provide placement into English 102. AP score reports can be downloaded for free from collegeboard.org. The .pdf copy can be emailed to esoperations@oakton.edu.
  • College-level English from another school with a grade of “C” or higher (e.g., English 101, Composition I, Rhetoric I)
    Submit official college transcript to the Enrollment Center or email an unofficial copy to esoperations@oakton.edu. (This also meets reading placement.)
  • Writing Placement Test
    Take in the Testing Center on either campus or during a scheduled test time.

Reading Placement

Math Placement

  • Direct Math Placement
    If a graduate of one of the following high schools: Evanston Township, Maine East, Maine West, Maine South, Niles North, Niles West, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South.
    Submit official high school transcript and an official or unofficial ACT or SAT score to the Enrollment Center. (ACT/SAT test date has to be within the last 2 years)
  • AP Scores
    A score of 3 or higher on either the Calculus AB or Calculus BC AP exams will meet math placement and provide placement into the next highest math course. (i.e. Calculus AB with a score of 3 or higher will place you into MAT 251 - Calculus II at Oakton). AP score reports can be downloaded for free from collegeboard.org. The .pdf copy can be emailed to esoperations@oakton.edu.
  • College level math from another school (College Algebra, Pre-calculus, Calculus I, etc.)
    Submit official college transcript to the Enrollment Center or email an unofficial copy to esoperations@oakton.edu.
  • Math Placement Test
    Take in the Testing Center on either campus or during a scheduled test time.
