If you are new to Oakton, you may need to take a placement test. Placement testing helps you and your advisors select the right courses to ensure your academic success. The results of these tests are important. Math and English tests determine what courses you will place into or whether you will need to start in developmental courses. These are not pass-or-fail tests; they simply let you know where to start.

What tests do I need to take?

If you're unsure about taking a placement test, view your admission checklist in the new student portal. You can also contact the Enrollment Center or view the Placement at Oakton page.

How do I take a placement test?

Placement tests can be taken on-campus or remotely. It's highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with each test before testing.

On-campus

Appointments are encouraged but not required at both campuses. Same-day testing will be available as capacity allows on a walk-in basis.

Remote

To take the placement tests remotely, the first step is to review the information about technical requirements. Then you will need to fill out the request form. This lets us know which tests you need to take. Directions for each test are sent separately.

What if I need accommodations?

Students who currently receive or intend to receive accommodations to complete a test should contact the Access and Disability Resource Center at 847.635.1489 or accessdisability@oakton.edu prior to testing.

Academic Integrity

Please remember Oakton's Code of Academic Conduct when you take exams. This code prohibits:

  • Cheating.
  • Plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation).
  • Falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth).
  • Helping others to cheat.
  • Unauthorized changes on official documents.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is a failure on the assignment. A disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of three years.
