Course Name: Instrumental Ensemble III
Credits: 2 (1 lecture; 6 lab)
III. Course (Catalog) Description
Course teaches techniques of performing and is open to all students interested in continuing on their various instruments. Classes form according to instrumentation. Auditions required.
IV. Learning Objectives
- To perform ensemble music at the appropriate level.
- To perform all kinds of repertoire, including symphonic literature.
- To give public performances that serve a powerful stimulus for the students to practice and to excel.
- To demonstrate listening and critical thinking skills through self and peer performances.
- To demonstrate ability to follow verbal and visual direction of the conductor during ensemble rehearsals and performances.
- To continue to demonstrate skills learned in MUS 106.
V. Academic Integrity and Student Conduct
• plagiarism (turning in work not written by you, or lacking proper citation),
• falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth),
• helping others to cheat,
• unauthorized changes on official documents,
• pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you,
• making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and
• any other behavior that violates academic integrity.
There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton's policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VI. Sequence of Topics
Representative topics such as:
- Sight reading all styles of classical, pop, and jazz music.
- Performance on campus and off.
- Discussion of warm-up techniques, dynamics, rhythm (eighth note interpretations, syncopations, triplets, etc.), and various styles.
VII. Methods of Instruction
Weekly rehearsals will include lectures, explanation, and extensive practice of skills. Most learning will be in a group setting although some emphasis will be placed on individual instruction and practice. Extra rehearsals are required as needed.
Course may be taught as face-to-face, hybrid or online course.
VIII. Course Practices Required
- Weekly attendance is mandatory.
- A minimum of sixty minutes of practice a day will be required.
- Acceptance of performance dates in advance.
IX. Instructional Materials
Representative music from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary periods will be used. Also different solo literature as well as Jazz, Ragtime and Popular periods will be used.
X. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress
Methods of evaluating a student’s progress will be determined on class attendance, preparedness, and progress a student makes in his/her playing during the semester. Attention to playing skills within ensemble performances will also be observed.
Attendance at all ensemble concerts and at all rehearsals is expected and required.
