Dual Credit Program

Oakton collaborates with partner high schools across the district area to offer college-level classes to eligible, driven high school students. Our dual credit courses are taught in high school classrooms by Oakton-approved high school teachers.

Oakton strives to provide students, instructors and high school personnel with the resources and support that empower students to successfully complete college-level courses in high school and successfully transition to college. In 2022, more than 3,600 high school students enrolled in the Oakton Dual Credit program, taught at a dozen high schools in our district.

Dual credit course offerings span both the academic and career technical disciplines. To determine if your high school is a dual credit partner and what courses are offered, review the list of Oakton dual credit partner high schools below.

Concurrent Enrollment

Oakton's Concurrent Enrollment Program allows high school juniors and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of C or higher to take one college class per semester on one of our campuses or online. Concurrent enrollment applications must be submitted no later than one week prior to the start date of the class.

  • Classes completed in this program will give you college credit while completing high school course requirements.
  • You'll be taking a college-level course with current Oakton students in addition to your high school course load.
  • Your credit will go onto an Oakton transcript that you can apply toward your Oakton degree or certificate or transfer to a four-year college or university.

If you want the course to also count toward a high school requirement (as dual credit), get permission from your high school before you take the class. When you complete the class, send your transcript to the high school to get the course posted on your high school record and count toward high school graduation requirements.

This is a great way to explore your interests or start earning credit toward a degree pathway or pre-major.

Earn Credit Toward Your General Education Requirements

Students who start at Oakton and plan to transfer to a four-year institution choose from general education courses that are part of the Illinois Articulation Initiative. These courses are accepted as transfer credit at 100+ participating Illinois colleges and universities. A full listing of institutions can be found at itransfer.org. Several of these courses can also be earned through advanced placement or dual credit.

Most Oakton classes are eligible for Early College students. Consult with your college or career counselor to choose classes on pathways to credentials or degrees.
