Northern Illinois University Guaranteed Admission and Honors Admission

What is it?

The NIU Guaranteed Admission Program will help you make a smooth transition to NIU. If you currently attend Oakton, the program makes it possible for you to be admitted to NIU at the same time. You can easily transfer into more than 60 NIU undergraduate degree programs.

Participation Details

To participate in the Guaranteed Admission Program, a student must:

  • Be a high school graduate.
  • Be in good standing at your community college.
  • Have completed a minimum of 24 transferable credit hours.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.00 (out of 4.00) at all colleges/universities attended.
  • Complete required general education coursework. Courses numbered lower than 100-level and courses not deemed transferable are not included in this agreement

How to Apply

  • Fill out the Guaranteed Admission Program Participation Form at least one year before your first semester at NIU. This form allows NIU and your community college to share information. It also enables you to take advantage of the reverse transfer process.
  • Continue to work with advisors at Oakton to track your progress toward your degree. NIU advisors will also help you track your degree progress and assist with the transfer process.
  • Please note, students in the U.S. on a nonimmigrant visa, must meet NIU's English proficiency requirement by completing ENG 121 and either ENG 122 or ENG 126 with grades of C or higher.
  • Students who wish to enroll in a limited admission program, will need to meet additional requirements. These requirements can include specific coursework or a higher minimum GPA. Students may be classified as a pre-major until you meet these requirements.
